Bagbazar: Bagbazar (also spelt Baghbazar) is a neighbourhood of north Kolkata, in Kolkata district in the Indian state of West Bengal. The area, under Shyampukur police station of Kolkata Police, has been, along with neighbouring Shyambazar, the citadel of the Bengali aristocracy. Bagbazar has played an active role in the growth and development of Kolkata. This is also one of the iconic names that come to our mind when we think about North Calcutta. But I bet most of you don't know the story behind this place.

On 1707 Captain Charles Perin bought a bungalow here, after his demise within 1 year of this purchase the East India Company bought that bungalow to make it a guns and firearms manufacturing factory.

And they made a small fort in front of the bungalow on the banks of Ganges river to prevent Siraj from attacking Kolkata. Because of this fort, Siraj was unable to enter Kolkata through gangs when he attacked Kolkata in 1756 instead he came here through a narrow canal beside the river. The Britishers lost against that attack of Siraj and that was the last any battle took place in Kolkata. So the bungalow of Perin Shaheb was left unused for decades and by the time a market(bazaar) started growing in front of the garden (Bagicha) so thus the name became Bagbazar.

Park Street: It is probably one of the most happening places of Kolkata. Many big hotels and restaurants are here in Park Street area but it was not like this always.

The first chief justice of the Indian Supreme Court used to have a huge Villa or Bagan Bari over there. Once deer used to roam around in this well-decorated garden. Because of this reason, this place got its name park street. Before it was called as the Burial Ground-street because of the cemetery out there.

Santosh Mitra Square: It is a very well known name among all the Bengalis because this place has to be there in your Durga pujas checklist of places to visit. But have you wondered who this Santosh Mitra was? He was a grad student of the presidency college and classmate of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. He was a rabble and had a lot of patriotic works up his sleeve. He was first arrested Alipore Bomb case along with Rishi Arabindo. In 1930 he was sent to the Hijli Detention Camp.nehru-museum_iit-kharagpur-59

He was shot there by the British troops for his nationalist acts. After this incident, the St. James Square was named after him as Santosh Mitra Square. And many years later the hijli detention camp was converted into a college. Which we know by the name Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur.
